About Us

Who We Are

Dave and Eric feel inspired to help alleviate the suffering of the Haitian people. They believe "to whom much is given, much is expected" and are inviting others to join them. They strongly believe that though they cannot do all the good the world needs, the world needs all the good they can do.

What We Do

We partnered to build an eye clinic in Haiti and are now working to fully supply it with medicine and equipment. We want it to be as clean and well-run as any clinic in the U.S. We plan to build a health clinic to serve pregnant women, provide vaccinations, and treat people with AIDS. We also currently help the Claire Heureuse Hospital in the Artibonite Valley with their maintenance needs.

Our Mission

DEXA (Doctors and Engineers eXpediting Advancement for Global Humanity) is a non-profit, tax-exempt charitable organization founded by Dr. Dave Bejot and Eric Messer to provide medical and construction relief to the people of Dessalines, Haiti, through the use of on-site teams from the United States. During every trip to this struggling part of the world, they encounter serious medical and housing needs. With the help of generous supporters, DEXA is making a difference in the lives of many people. Anyone with the desire to help is invited to join in this very important and very rewarding work.

Our Team

  • Dr. Dave Bejot
    President

Dave was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, and grew up in a small farm town in Seward.

When he was in college at the University of Nebraska, Dave knew he wanted to help people through medicine, so he chose to pursue a career in optometry.

He received his doctorate from the Ohio State College of Optometry. Upon completion of an ocular disease residency in 1994, he joined The Eye Center of Toledo, which has since been renamed TLC Eye Care and Laser Centers. Dave laughs now that about the only thing he never accomplished at Ohio State was to participate in the college’s annual eye mission trip to Central America.

In the mid-2000s, Dave met Eric who, as an engineer, was organizing an eye mission team to provide medical care and prescribe glasses. Dave was inspired by Eric’s desire to help the poor and the energy and passion Eric displayed.

After their first eye mission trip to Haiti, Dave came away feeling blessed and fortunate to live in the U.S. and realized that we often take our sight, and health care, for granted.

In 2011, after many trips to Haiti, Dave and Eric founded DEXA to help Haitians with the medical, educational and structural needs they face daily. They have made many good friends in Haiti and continue to feel blessed to have been called to this work.

  • Eric Messer
    Vice President

Eric served in the Army from 1981-1989 as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division and a crew chief on Blackhawk helicopters.

In 1985, he married Robin and several years later, they welcomed their daughter and son into the family.

In 1989, he began an apprenticeship as a tool-and-die maker, completing the program in 1993. Eric has worked since 1999 as the mechanical department engineering manager at Sponseller Group, Inc.

Eric taught Sunday school for teen-aged school students and served as a youth advisor for his church where he was tasked with getting students involved with mission work. Within three years, Eric and his fellow youth advisors were working in Rio Bravo, Mexico, on medical mission trips.

In the mid-2000s Eric was asked by Pastor Mark Cryderman to be on a church mission board. The result was that Eric led an eye team into Dessalines, Haiti. When Dr. Dave Bejot expressed an interest in the trip, he became the lead doctor. From that day, Eric and Dave have teamed up to do what they can to alleviate suffering in Haiti.

In 2011, after many trips to Haiti, Dave and Eric founded DEXA to help Haitians with the medical, educational and structural needs they face daily. They have made many good friends in Haiti and continue to feel blessed to have been called to this work.
